A swan has been killed and butchered in Thetford.

Witnesses are being sought after the bird’s body was found on Barnham Cross Common, close to the fence line of the British Trust for Ornithology, at about 4pm on January 28.

Police have said the swan had been cleanly cut with both breasts and the head removed. The meat was also taken from the thighs.

The precise nature in which the bird was cut indicates it was not attacked by another animal.

Swans are protected under the 1981 Wildlife and Countryside Act, which makes it an offence to kill, injure or take wild birds.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact PCSO Gavin Tampin at Thetford Police Station on 101 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
