Smoke has been seen coming from pavement in a street close to Bury St Edmunds town centre.
A fire crew from Bury was called to reports of smoke coming out of the pavement in Short Brackland, behind Cornhill Walk Shopping Centre, at around 1.45pm today.
A spokeswoman for Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said UK Power Networks had been contacted and its engineers were investigating a ‘suspected electric fault’ at the scene.
A UK Power Networks spokeswoman said its engineers were ‘working hard’ to restore power to 54 customers in the St John’s Street area of Bury following a fault on its underground network earlier today, which is thought to have been responsible for the smoke seen coming from pavement in Short Brackland.
She added: “Power was interrupted to 18 customers when the initial fault occurred at about 2pm. At 3.20pm, to enable our engineers to safely make repairs, a further 36 customers had to have their power isolated.
“We would like to reassure our customers that we are doing everything we can to return their power supplies to normal as soon as we can.”
