Sober as a judge – why Paul from Bury St Edmunds is facing a dry stag do

Sober as a judge - Paul Booty will quit booze for a month as part of a charity challenge

Next month Paul Booty will go on his stag do – having undertaken a challenge to stay sober for October to raise money for a cause close to his heart.

The solicitor who lives in Bury St Edmunds and who is a partner at McCarthy Stewart Booty in Stowmarket, will be doing his best to avoid booze, so that he can raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Temptation will be everywhere.

“It is quite funny – I took part in a Bury Golf Club captain’s charity day about a month or so ago and won my weight in Greene King beer.

“They are due to deliver it this week – it is a lot of beer – 17 and a half stone’s worth – I’m not quite that heavy but close enough.

“I’ll have to wait until November before I get properly stuck into that,” said Paul.

He will be staying as sober as a judge – as well as being a solicitor, Paul, 47, is a part time deputy district judge.

Paul said he was roped into the challenge by a friend.

“I lost my dad to cancer when I was about 11, so I have always supported Cancer Research. And when a friend told me about this, I thought I would give it a go.

“It is going to be a struggle staying sober for a whole month but if you are going to do something for a worthwhile cause it should require some effort,” said Paul.

“It is going to be difficult – I am getting married at the end of the year and I have got my stag do next month.

“I might end up as the designated driver for the night.”

The Go Sober for October scheme includes a golden ticket which can be bought for a minimum of £15 and buys the holder a night out.

“I feel I will be cheating if I buy one of these myself. I’m just hoping somebody else takes pity on me and buys me one of them so I can have a night off on my stag do,” said Paul.
