Talented young musicians are being given a unique chance to showcase their skills in the first West Suffolk Schools Rock and Pop Awards.

Music industry experts are to embark on a 13 date tour of secondary schools across the area with acclaimed band Underline The Sky to hone pupil’s skills and broaden their horizons in action packed workshops.

One band from each school will be handpicked to perform and battle it out for five glittering accolades at an awards night at The Apex, in Bury St Edmunds, on February 28.

The initiative is being organised by Industry Education in Music in partnership with Suffolk County Music Service and the Bury Free Press.

The workshops will be delivered over the next two months by former Stowmarket High School student Sam Robson, who is an experienced school liason officer and will share his knowledge of the music industry.

Joined by Underline The Sky and crew members, the Brighton Institute of Modern Music graduate will arrange students into smaller groups to work with band members to create an ensemble piece to perform to the other groups or as a class.

Students can attend a short master class in stage sound and sound checking.

They also have the chance to work in depth with the band and crew to refine their live performance and work on aspects such as sound, stage presence, positioning and image.

Each school date will feature a 30 t0 45 minuet performance from Underline The Sky.

A band from each school will then compete for five awards infront of an audience of 500 at the Apex.

They are best live performance, best image, best musicians and most likely to make it big.

There is also a best original song category, which will be voted for by the readers of the Bury Free Press and associated newspaper titles.

The night will be headlined by Underline the Sky.
