Relief road and ‘growth site’ to be considered

Planning applications for a relief road in Bury St Edmunds and the first of five sites in the town identified for development in Vision 2031 are due to be considered on Thursday.

St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s development control committee is to consider plans for a relief road on Moreton Hall and a ‘strategic growth site’ to the north west of Bury.

The proposed eastern relief road would head east from the roundabout on the junction of Skyliner Way and Lady Miriam Way and link into the northern part of junction 45 on the A14.

Objections from neighbours include concerns that the road network and local amenities ‘can not take the extra burden’ and that Sow Lane, between Mount Road and the proposed road, ‘is currently very dangerous’ and should have a cycle path.

The application for Bury’s north west site concerns three proposals, the formation of a link road between Mildenhall Road and Tut Hill, the change of use of land between the new link road and Fornham All Saints (FAS) to informal countryside recreation and residential development to include a retail centre, land for a primary school and public open space.

Fornham All Saints Parish Council has made a number of objections to the application.

They include its ‘wish’ to see the number of houses capped at 900 and its belief that the application ‘fails to reflect the views of FAS villagers that all (or nearly all of) the land between the new link road and the village should remain in agricultural use’.

Both planning applications have been recommended for approval.

If the relief road is approved, applicant The Churchmanor Estates Company would be able to begin work on the scheme.

If the north west site is approved, Countryside Properties would be required to submit a more detailed plan to decide the layout and design of the houses, which are unlikely to be built before 2015.
