It has been announced today that a toll on the A14, aimed at raising funds for road improvements will not go ahead.

It has been reported that Treasury chief secretary Danny Alexander will announce that the project to improve the 25-mile stretch of road will instead be funded by the taxpayer.

The Government had previously proposed a toll on the road between Cambridge and Huntingdon to help fund £1.5 billion in improvements.

The announcement was met with anger by MPs, council leaders and businesses who said the toll would have a detrimental effect on the region’s economy.
