An online petition to the Competition Commission to stop it forcing the sale of three Picture House cinemas has more than 4,400 signatures.
The commission said last month that it may force Cineworld, which took over Picture House’s owners City Screen, to sell one of its cinemas in three towns, Bury St Edmunds, Cambridge and Aberdeen, to protect competition and stop price rises. It asked for views to be emailed to firstname.lastname@example.org.
But an online petition has been started by Mark Liversidge of Iselham.
It says: “We believe that the potential sale or loss of the Picturehouse cinemas in Cambridge, Bury St. Edmunds and Aberdeen will be damaging to consumers and to the fabric of the local area.”
It argues the sale could increase prices, reduce choice and threaten the future of local arts festivals.
