Two classroom assistants have raised £1,905 for Children with Cancer UK by running the Great North Run.

Rachel Popham and Kelly Whipp, from South Lee Nursery in Bury St Edmunds, ran the 13.2 mile course in September.

The pair were inspired to raise the money after they heard one of the children at the nursery was facing his own cancer battle.

Rachel said: “We had a little boy in our nursery who was diagnosed with Leukemia and was going through chemotherapy.

“He was such a brave little boy to go through it at such a young age and we wanted to give something back.

“We felt if he can go through that gruelling treatment, we can run 13 miles.

“We aimed to raise £1,000 but have managed to raise nearly £2,000.

“Although we have finished the race, we’re going to keep the website going as we’d still like to reach the £2,000 mark if we can.”
