Wayne Hurr Hair has won the BFP Salon of the Year competition

The winner of this year’s Bury Free Press Salon of the Year competition is an independent business that opened less than six months ago.

Wayne Hurr Hair, in Churchgate Street, Bury St Edmunds, fought off competition from some well-established, big names to scoop the impressive title.

It is owned by Wayne Hurr, a hairdresser of almost 20 years who has worked at salons in Bury since 2003, and his husband, Steve, who helps manage the business.

“The salon’s named after Wayne because of his reputation in the town – he’s a brand himself,” said Steve, adding, “We’ve only been open a relatively short amount of time but all Wayne’s clients followed him, so we hit the ground running.”

“It’s just amazing to win this within five months of being open, and to have all that support from our clients who took the time out to vote for us,” said Wayne, 35, who always dreamt of owning his own salon.

On what makes his business stand out, he said: “I think it’s the atmosphere – everyone’s so friendly. We’ve got a perfect team – a lot of us have known each other for years.”

Steve, 45, added: “Our clients love the location, the atmosphere and the professionalism – they know when they walk out they’re going to feel good.”

Wayne began his training at Toni&Guy and has a L’Oreal colour specialist degree.

He says he loves his job because he enjoys ‘making people feel so much better about themselves’.

“Someone can have a really expensive dress on but if their hair’s not right they may as well be wearing a dustbin bag,” he said.

Sophia Wilson, one of the salon’s many clients who voted for it in the competition, said: “I’ve known Wayne probably for 14 years in various other places he’s worked and I was very excited about his new venture and wanted to support him.”

She praised the individual service offered at the salon and the time its staff take ‘to understand what you’re looking for in a hair cut’.

She added: “I know he hasn’t been open for long and it’s always brave to start a new business, particularly these days, and I wish them all lots of luck.

“To win this award is a fantastic achievement and just shows the confidence his clients have.”

Wayne Hurr Hair is open 9am-6pm Monday-Friday and 8am-4pm on Saturdays. To find out more, visit or call 01284 756477.
