An £800,000 unit has opened at West Suffolk Hospital to assess and treat short stay patients and help avoid unnecessary admissions.

The facility will care for about 30 patients a day who have come into the hospital via the emergency department and need a few hours of monitoring or treatment before a decision is taken on whether to admit or discharge them.

John Green, chief operating officer, said the unit will help ‘prevent up to 15 unnecessary admissions to the main hospital every day, making sure beds remain available for those in the greatest clinical need’.
