Fire cadets from Mildenhall College Academy were put through their paces at the town’s fire station on Monday.

Their six week ‘military style’ training programme, which came to an end this week, was designed by the school’s fire liaison officer, Andrew Sheldrick, to engage the pupils in typical fire work, including running out hoses, climbing ladders and search and rescue.

Mr Sheldrick, of Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service, said the purpose of the course was to ‘instil discipline, build confidence and encourage team work to achieve’ in pupils that had been chosen by the school as most likely to benefit.

He said: “Parents seem suitably impressed and say they have noticed a vast improvement in their child’s attitude at home and at school, so we think the course is working well.”
