Former world speedway champion Michael Lee has today been found not guilty of an allegation of rape.

Lee, 55, was also found not guilty of assaulting the same alleged woman victim and causing her actual bodily harm as well as sexually assaulting another woman.

The on Thursday he had been found not guilty by the same jury of a second alleged sexual assault.

After the jury of six men and six women returned their verdicts at Ipswich Crown Court, Judge Rupert Overbury who had presided over the 12-day trial told Lee that he was free to leave the dock.

During the trial Lee had told the jury that he believed the allegations, which he strongly denied, had been aimed at “destroying” him. He said that all were without foundation.

Lee, of Freckenham Road, Worlington, claimed that the alleged rape victim had been “emotionally disturbed.”

Lee, co-promoter of the Mildenhall Fen Tigers, was crowned individual world speedway champion in 1980 and rode for teams including King’s Lynn, Poole and Boston.
