When Robert Everitt was made mayor of St Edmundsbury he adopted Gatehouse as one of his charities for his year in office.
On Tuesday he visited Gatehouse’s Bury St Edmunds headquarters to be shown round the facilities to see what they do first hand.
The charity is best known for running a foodbank, but its services to disadvantaged people across West Suffolk include lunch clubs, a day centre, furniture store and an annual Christmas day lunch for those living alone.
Cllr Everitt also met customers of Gatehouse’s Memory Café, which provides support for those with dementia and memory loss and their carers.
At his mayor making he said he supported Gatehouse because ‘it helps the most impoverished’.
