Hardworking housekeeper Mary Walker was given a special send off by staff at West Suffolk Hospital on Friday – after working on the wards for almost 35 years.

Mary, 68, of Fornham Road, Bury, said it was an emotional day saying goodbye to the team.

“I won’t miss the work but I will miss the company,” she said.

“I have been really happy here - it’s sad to be leaving.”

Mary’s first day was on October 9 1978, four years after the hospital opened.

As she would have worked at the hospital for 35 years in October, Executive director for workforce and communications Jan Bloomfield awarded Mary a special certificate.

She said: “Mary will be sorely missed by her team and by her management.

“Thank you so much for your long service, the fact that there are so many people here shows how loved you are.”

Mary now plans to spend more time with her husband and family.

“We were even talking about having another holiday which will be nice”, she said.
