Bury St Edmunds-based drug and alcohol rehabilitation charity Focus12 and Southgate Church are to host the town’s first major youth drug awareness event.
The event – at the Southgate Community Centre in Caie Walk on March 8 – will combine testimony from individuals in recovery, giving an honest and open overview of their experiences of substance misuse and their subsequent recovery.
Entertainment will include musical performances from three bands and an artwork presentation from Artheads, Bury’s creative centre for people recovering from substance misuse problems or with mental health issues.
The night will also act as a kick-off event for a 12-mile sponsored walk on April 5.
A local youth group were inspired to raise money for Focus12 when a graduate of their abstinence-based treatment programme went to speak to them about his experiences concerning drug and alcohol misuse. The message really struck a chord, so much so, they decided to do something positive in return.
Mike Lloyd, Focus12’s project co-ordinator for the event, said: “This is a really important opportunity for us to engage with young people around drug and alcohol addiction and to start this important conversation early.
“We are hoping that many of the young people in the area will come along for a great night with some fantastic live music and we will get a chance to get an important message across whilst planning some much needed fund-raising activities for Focus12.”
