Plans for a major new development in Stowmarket, including a 55 bedroom hotel, have been announced.
The scheme will include 33 residential units - 25 town houses and eight apartments - as well as a 1,000 sq ft cafe and modern hotel.
Retail Development Partnership (RDP) is submitting a planning application to Mid Suffolk District Council for the development, between Wharfside House and Navigation Approach, in the near future.
The site is currently being used as a temporary car park.
The development’s residential area will be arranged in a courtyard around a central waterside area.
RDP said the development ‘will make a major contribution towards the enhancement of this important part of the town centre’.
The scheme has been designed to comply with the town Council’s aspirations for the area set out in the development brief for the Station quarter and the Stowmarket Area Action Plan.
Town Clerk David Blackburn said the build would solve Stowmarket’s problem of having plenty to do but nowhere to stay.
“Stowmarket needs a large high quality hotel near its centre,” he said.
“We are aware that local businesses have identified the need for such a hotel as currently their guests and potential clients have to use accommodation in neighbouring villages.
“It is a big issue for the town, the lack of hotel accommodation that is available.
“The development of a big hotel in the centre of Stowmarket could be of great benefit to the business community and for tourism.”
