Investigations have been launched after an 86-year-old man was assaulted at West Suffolk Hospital two weeks before he died.
Patient Richard Bowman, of Exning, was assaulted by another patient with a bottle at the hospital, in Bury St Edmunds, on November 25 and died 12 days later.
A post mortem revealed he died of natural causes and police, who say Mr Bowman sustained bruising, are not treating his death as suspicious.
Suffolk Police and the hospital are both investigating the incident.
A police spokesman said: “A post mortem examination has been held into the death of an 86-year-old man from Exning who died at West Suffolk Hospital on Saturday December 7.
“The result of the post mortem was that the man died of natural causes and as such the death is not being treated as suspicious.
“This matter will now be dealt with by the coroner.
“Officers continue to investigate reports of an assault against the deceased man at the hospital on November 25.”
A spokeswoman for the hospital added: “We would like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere condolences to the patient’s family.
“We are taking this incident extremely seriously and are carrying out a full internal investigation, as well as assisting with the police inquiry.”
