Go ahead given for new warehouse that will create 50 new jobs near Stanton

Around 50 new jobs will be created by DHL near Stanton in return for them putting in funds towards a £2.25m road scheme.

The firm gained planning permission from St Edmundsbury Borough Council’s development control committee on Thursday, subject to final details over the amount it will pay towards the road scheme.

It is to replace 13 units at Shepherds Grove Industrial Estate with a single storage and distribution facility.

The move, it said will increase its floor space and lead to an estimated 50 new jobs,

Suffolk County Council has safety concerns about the junction between Sumner Road and the A143.

It want a roundabout to reduce both the number and severity of collisions – but did not have the budget for it.

The borough council, using a ratio on the amount of DHL traffic that will use the junction, has calculated DHL should pay £54,813 towards the £2.25m project.

But County Cllr Jo Spicer who represents the area said: “I’m concerned that asking for a contribution to a roundabout will take us no further to actually getting a roundabout.”

And Stanton Parish Council said it ‘could not agree to the application unless there is a significant contribution to this roundabout’.
