When Neil Hutson decided to raise some money in memory of friend Dennis Driscoll, he thought it might make about £500, but it has snowballed.
Now, there are five fellow walkers, including Dennis’ son Kev and grandson Chas, and the appeal, to be split between St Nicholas Hospice Care and the Bobby Moore Fund for Cancer Research, has received backing from national sports people and clubs.
“I think we could even make 10 grand now,” said Neil, a builder from Banks Walk, Bury St Edmunds.
Dennis, from Bury, was on the committee of the Sugar Beet Social Club and was chairman of Bury Darts League. He worked forVintens for more than 20 years. He died, aged 75, in January 2013 six weeks after discovering he had an asbestos related cancer.
Neil’s plan is to walk round every top London football club , getting pictures on the pitches, and doing 72 miles, on April 3 and 5. He aims to finish with pictures on the pitch before the West Ham v Liverpool game, because Dennis was a West Ham fan.
Then he auction signed team shirts and other sporting must-haves at an event in Bury’s LP Club on April 30.
The items can be viewed at the Glad Abbott pub, Glastonbury Road, on April 19 and The Homeguard Club Abbot Road, on April 24.
