A teenager who was diagnosed with a brain tumour aged 14 has raised £3,352 for a charity which supported her and her family throughout her illness.
Leanne Walpole, 19, beat her £1,000 target after organising a fun day at St Mary’s Church, in her home village of Feltwell, in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust (TCT).
The money will pay for six young people battling cancer to enjoy a weekend at Center Parcs, in Elveden.
Leanne, who was diagnosed in 2009 and now has to take medication following an operation on the tumour, said: “All my hard work paid off. It shows that if you want to achieve something you can.
“The Teenage Cancer Trust were like my family.
“If my mum and dad came up to the ward and just needed to go for a cup of tea or coffee, they would just come and sit with me, play games and take me downstairs to the concourse.”
The fun day, which included a bouncy castle, a man waxing his legs, refreshments and cakes, raised more than £2,000.
Meanwhile, a beer festival held on the same weekend raised more than £1,300 with another donation of £214.
Leanne said: “When I woke up on Saturday morning and saw the rain I must admit to being worried but hundreds turned up at the church for the fun day and it was an overwhelming success.
“The second annual beer festival also went down very well with live music, a quiz and other activities attracting a very impressive turnout.
“I’m extremely grateful for their support and the many donations given to me by kind- hearted individuals.
“It will all go towards making life easier for teenagers suffering from cancer through the brilliant work of TCT.”
Her dad Malcolm said: “What she’s done has been brilliant – we back her all the way.
“People in the village have been really good to her.”
Meanwhile, Leanne has inspired the newly formed Feltwell Fundraisers committee to raise money for the trust.
They are also supporting the North Aisle Project at St Mary’s Church.
The committee has organised the village’s sixth annual Yard Sales Day on Saturday July 5 from 9am to 2pm.
A large number of sales will be held around the village and a list of addresses and village map will be available from St Mary’s from 8.30am.
A £1 an item stall will be held at the church where there will be refreshments and toilet facilities. Details of those holding sales will also be on Feltwell Fundraisers’ Facebook page on the evening of Friday July 4 - facebook.com/FeltwellFundraisers
