Celebrating its 30th anniversary, the success of Suffolk enterprise agency Menta can be found in the thousands of burgeoning businesses it has helped to support.

A local success story is Thurston-based Yum Yum Tree Fudge run by Lily and Adrian Turner who started the fudge-making limited company from their home in 2009 where they can still be found today.

The business started as a hobby for the couple with Menta, in Eastern Way, Bury St Edmunds, helping them develop into a thriving business.

Adrian said: “They helped us form our business plan, gave us new ideas and lots of contacts. It was also great in the early days to be able to bounce ideas with a Menta adviser, free of charge. They helped us get started and later, we were able to help other Menta start-up businesses by presenting at one of their events about how we had evolved and grown. It’s been a great circle of help. We have also been given good support from our accountant, Sarah Place.”

With four full-time and three part-time staff, the business has grown from just the two business owners to a company producing and selling over 12 tonnes of fudge a year.

Selling at local food fairs and markets, they also supply various outlets and online via their website and sell at the Southbank Street Food Market three days a week. They supply Harrods in London, and locally, provided R G Carter Builders with 1,100 bags of Christmas pudding fudge last December for staff hampers.

On their longer term aims, Lily said: “We want to make the UK’s best fudge and to expand production to meet the demand for our products. At the moment our sales for 2013 were at £250.000, with £400,000 expected in 2015 and by 2017? Over £1 million – pretty good for a small Suffolk business. We will need a business unit to trade from in two year’s time though.”

Alex Till, chief executive of Menta, said: “Menta wants to ensure that it is the first port of call for small businesses in Suffolk and we will watch Yum Yum Tree Fudge’s growth with interest. It is just one of the thousands of success stories Menta has been involved with over the past 30 years.”
