Demolition crews have smashed down garages and outdated council houses in Stowmarket and Woolpit to make way for brand new modern council homes with affordable rent.

Members of Mid Suffolk and Babergh district councils, affordable housing developer Lovell and representatives from Orbit Homes, which will manage the properties, attended the official start of demolition last Thursday.

Work is in progress to knock down four Unity houses and 34 garages at St Mary’s Road, Stowmarket, which will be replaced by 14 brand-new homes. Eight Unity post-war pre-cast concrete homes at Steeles Road, Woolpit, are also being demolished which will be replaced by 21 new homes and four one bedroom flats.

Laura Handford, Orbit Homes regional development manager, said: “It’s really good to be involved in this project especially as we will be providing quality homes for existing and new residents.

“We are working alongside Mid Suffolk District Council to ensure minimal distruption to the existing residents and looking forward to starting on phase two.”

Cllr Marylyn Curran, Mid Suffolk’s Portfolio holder for Housing, said: “We are committed to providing good quality, affordable homes for our residents.

“This project will see outdated and not-fit-for-purpose housing being replaced by modern, sustainable homes that will enable families and residents to stay in an area of Mid Suffolk in which they have chosen to live.”

Lovell regional director Tony Tann said the development would make a real differerence to local people.

He said: “Our team is delighted that demolision is now under way and we look forward to working closely with the local community and Orbit Homes throughout the construction work.”
