County council to freeze its share of tax precept

Suffolk County Council plans to freeze its share of council tax for the third consecutive year.

The move ensures the Band D council tax for county services remains at £1,126.53.

It is part of the authority’s 2013/14 budget, which features £24.9 million in cuts.

The savings include £9.7 million in ‘efficiency and cutting bureaucracy’ and £7 million by intervening earlier in adult care to save on more expensive care at a later stage.

The authority made £42.5 million in cuts in 2011/12 and is on track to deliver a further £26.2 million this year.

More cuts are expected after the Government indicated its deficit reduction will extend to include 2017/18.

Cllr Jane Storey, cabinet member for finance, said: “Tough decisions have had to be made to address the speed at which funding has been withdrawn from the council. It seems further reductions will be coming our way.”
