A council will make a commitment to help a Bury St Edmunds community in need of a new community centre when it signs a ‘memorandum of understanding’ next week.
By signing the document on Friday, St Edmundsbury Borough Council will pledge to maintain the Newbury Community Centre, in St Olaves Road, on the Howard Estate, while it carries out a feasibility study into the cost of a new facility, the ownership of which would be transferred to the community.
Cllr Sara Mildmay-White, portfolio holder for health and communities, said: “This is an exciting stage in the provision of community facilities on the Howard estate. Next Friday will mark an historic day for residents living in this part of Bury St Edmunds with the signing of a pledge for us to maintain the existing Newbury Centre whilst undertaking a feasibility study with our partners to provide a brand new community centre fit for the 21st century.
“It is great news and, while it has taken a long time to reach this stage, we look forward to working with all local residents and partners over the coming months on the next phase of this ambitious project.”
