St Edmundsbury Borough Council has taken action after travellers moved onto the car park at Bury Leisure Centre in Beetons Way.

Six unauthorised vehicles moved onto the car park, which is leased from Suffolk County Council by the Borough Council, on Tuesday night.

A traveller welfare officer visited the site on Wednesday and this morning a case conference was held to determine the welfare needs of the people living nearby, the centre users and the travellers.

The meeting found the encampment could not be tolerated and a section 77 direction will be served tomorrow requiring the travellers to leave by 10am on Monday.

A council spokeswoman said: “In the meantime we are working with Abbeycroft Leisure, who manage the leisure centre, to ensure that any disruption to leisure centre customers and car park users is kept to a minimum.”

Extra parking has been made available at Olding Road and West Suffolk House after hours.
