Suffolk County Council is considering agreeing a new toleration agreement with a traveller family who have set up an authorised encampment in Bury St Edmunds.

The group have returned to the site off Orttewell Road that they had previously been allowed to use as a ‘temporary winter stopping place’.

Cllr Beccy Hopfensperger, cabinet member for localities and environment, said: “Whilst we do not condone the actions of the family in moving back onto Orttewell Road once the toleration agreement had ended, we recognise the need to find a long-term solution to the wider issue of unauthorised encampments in the area.

“We are, therefore, currently considering agreeing a new, short term, toleration agreement between all parties concerned whilst long-term solutions are found.”
