A council is considering undertaking a community governance review to decide whether to create a separate council for one of its Bury St Edmunds wards.
On Monday, St Edmundsbury Borough Council approved a motion by Cllr Trevor Beckwith to have a committee look at whether a partial community governance review should be carried out, with a view to creating a parish council for Moreton Hall.
Cllr Beckwith says his proposal, for the estate to break away from the town council, would allow Moreton Hall residents to decide how to use income generated on the estate.
He had planned to force the review by collecting signatures of at least 10 per cent of the Moreton Hall electorate, but this week’s decision may mean that is no longer necessary.
Supporting the motion, Cllr David Nettleton said: “I think the Bury Town Council would be better if it lost certain parts.”
