A campaign group has met with members of the Theatre Royal’s board to discuss their concerns over the venue’s future.
The Theatre Support Group voiced their fears over the historic venue’s potential merger with the St Edmundsbury Borough Council run Apex.
Last week the board announced it would conduct a period of public consultation over the proposal for a single operation with the Apex and an alternative plan for continued independence with potential for shared services.
Charles Simpson, a leading member of the support group, said the meeting was ‘useful and constructive’.
He added: “The board members listened to our concerns and agreed that the whole process of due diligence, the exploration of financial implications and operating structures, which are still far from clear, and the need to consider all the options will obviously take more time.”
The support group, which consists of life patrons, former board members, friends, volunteers and users of the theatre, aims to ensure that any decisions taken over a change in the theatre’s operating structure are made only following ‘thorough investigations’ into the long term financial implications.
