When drivers get free parking, bus passengers should get their fares refunded, a councillor has argued.
Independent councillor David Nettleton asked at last night’s meeting of St Edmundsbury Borough Council whether it would consider a refund and received a simple ‘no’ from economic growth portfolio holder Alaric Pugh.
Cllr Nettleton, who oversaw a review of parking charges, added: “Why does the council think it fair for people coming in by car to get in free where people using sustainable transport, which we’re trying to encourage, have to pay?”
Cllr Pugh replied: “Our strategic plan emphasises growth.”
He said parking charges were invested in parking services which were used to manage traffic and access to towns’ facilities.
He added: “We need to be able to encourage economic growth in all our towns.
Motorists now get free parking after 3pm on Tuesdays in Bury St Edmunds.
