County councillor Colin Noble has been sacked from the cabinet following his leadership challenge.
Cllr Noble, who had responsibility for finance, will serve as a backbencher after leader Cllr Mark Bee said it was not feasible for them to work together.
Cllr Bee said: “There was a breakdown of trust and confidence and it was quite obvious we couldn’t work together.”
Cllr Noble’s attempt to oust Cllr Bee has been reported as being defeated by 21 votes to 18. He has said his priority now is to represent his constituents.
He said: “I was elected to represent the residents of Row Heath and I will continue to do that to the best of my ability whether I am in the cabinet or the backbenches.”
Cllr Noble said he had made the challenge because Conservative members had concerns about a lack of consultation within the party group.
Cllr Noble said:“I hope that with so many people not wishing him to be the leader he seeks to find a way forward that involves all the group.
“Having won he called for unity and we wait to see if that translates into a meaningful dialogue with those that have concerns. “
Following the challenge, Cllr Bee has said he will meet with all members and has called for the party to ‘move forward and unite’.
