A regular at Bury St Edmunds’ Old Cannon Brewery - whose favourite seat was reserved by a personalised pub plaque - has passed away.
Kenneth Wales had frequented the pub in Cannon Street longer than anyone, even he, could remember and had a ‘Ken’s Seat Reserved’ plaque above ‘his’ seat.
Pub landlady Hannah Clark said the plaque, which will stay put in Ken’s memory, was first installed at the request of customers who had noticed him ‘gradually working his way’ towards the pub’s ‘comfy seating’ and wanted him, instead, to be able to ‘come in and sit straight down’.
She said: “We were a bit apprehensive but we spoke to him about it and, of course, he was delighted.
“The plaque was up a couple of days later and from that point on he would politely ask people to shuffle along, point to the plaque and sit down.
“I think he actually quite liked the attention, and it gave him a reason to talk to people and for people to talk to him.”
Ken, who never married, died last Tuesday at Ashmore Nursing Home, in Stanton, where he had lived since becoming ill earlier this year.
A RIP message on the Old Cannon’s website says Ken was ‘much loved and will be missed by many’.
A funeral will take place at West Suffolk Crematorium, in Risby, on Friday at 4.30pm.
