A Bury St Edmunds man who missed a flight from Stansted Airport helped himself to cans of beer from a terminal shop while he waited for another flight, a court has heard.
Edgars Kalnitis, 52, of The Vinefields, was heading to his son’s wedding when he missed the flight.
He pleaded guilty to theft at Chelmsford Magistrates’ Court and today paid a high price for the four cans of Guinness he stole on December 20, last year.
The beer was worth £6.20 but Kalnitis was fined £260 and ordered to pay £105 in costs – equivalent to £91.25 for each can.
The court heard that police were called after Kalnitis was seen to conceal the cans under his coat and leave the terminal shop.
Kalnitis told magistrates: “I missed my flight. I wanted to be at my youngest son’s wedding. I had promised my sick mother to be there. I had one day left to spend in the airport and I started drinking.”
He added that he was arrested after returning to the store to pay for the beer.
