Airtrooper Lauren Morgan and Corporal Oliver Mercer are no strangers to Afghanistan but they have just returned from their first deployment there as a couple.

Lauren was on her second deployment and Oliver on his fourth with the Wattisham based 654 Squadron, 4 Regiment Army Air Corps and its Apache attack helicopters.

Lauren, 23, who joined the Army in 2007 straight from school in Llandrindod, Wales, said: “It’s nice being on tour together, but no different to what we are used to back home as we met through the Army through working together.”

She is an aviation groundcrew specialist, in charge of Apache ammunition, or an ‘Apache gunwoman’.

During the six months in Afghanistan she learned she had been promoted to Lance Corporal.

Oliver, 26, from Bolton, who joined up in 2005, made squadron history by being the only remaining serving person in the squadron to have deployed on all four of 654 Sqn’s Afghanistan detachments.

This time he was a shift commander and physical training instructor there.
