A Bury St Edmunds nurse was shocked to be given star treatment on national television in a Mother’s Day surprise arranged by her daughter.
Jo Godden believed she was travelling to London with her daughter granddaughter to celebrate them having won a mother and daughter competition last Wednesday.
However on arrival she was surprised by the team from ITV’s This Morning who transformed her appearance with new clothes, make up and a beautiful hair cut.
Jo, 50, is a rheumatology specialist nurse at West Suffolk Hospital. She said: “I did enjoy it. It was just a bit surreal. I was thinking why is this happening to me?
“Me and my daughter had a bad few years and that’s why she put the application in and said ‘I want to surprise mum’.”
Jo’s daughter Beckie, 21, submitted the application after seeing the competition advertised in February.
Beckie said her mum had been her ‘rock’ through tough times.
Both mother and daughter have battled health problems, Jo had cervical cancer while Becky had an operation to remove part of her thyroid.
Despite coping with ongoing tests Beckie said that Jo has provided her with support through her treatment as well as when her boyfriend was killed in a motorcycle accident and later when she fell pregnant with her daughter Lily.
In her application Becky said: “My Mum is the most incredible person, and the best grandmother to my one year old Daughter, Lily.
“Not only is she my best friend, she is also my role model.”
Jo said she really enjoyed the make over.
She said: “I cried on national TV I think I was in shock I was just amazed that she had thought of me and felt she wanted to write in and everything because to me I would do anything for my daughter.”
Beckie said “It was so lovely, it was so nice to give her something back. It was nice to do things to make her smile.”
