The former MP of Bury St Edmunds Sir Eldon Griffiths, 88, is to marry again.

He will marry Susan Donnell author of Pocahontas, and Godmother of Sir Eldon’s son John from his first marriage.

John, leader of St Edmundsbury Borough Council, will be his father’s best man.

The wedding will take place on July 2 at the register office followed by a reception in the Athenaeum, a religious service in London the next day and celebrations in the USA later this year.

It comes three years after the death of his second wife, Lady Betty Griffiths.

Sir Eldon said: “I have known Susan for 50 years. I don’t handle life very well on my own. I am fortunate that Susan is a friend of mine and is prepared to put up with me.”

John said: “I don’t know how many people have been best man to their father marrying their godmother but I am thrilled.

“I am delighted for them.”
