A generous great-grandmother has raised £440 for a leading cancer charity from her 90th birthday after foregoing presents and asking for donations instead.

Lily Baalham, of Badwell Ash, managed to make £230 through a donation bucket at her birthday party attended by 60 family members and friends.

The rest came through money in her 78 birthday cards and her total haul was donated to a Cancer Research shop, in Bury St Edmunds.

Mrs Baalham, who was a factory worker at John Rannoch’s, in Haughley Park, wanted to do something for the charity as family members have suffered from cancer.

She said: “I want to thank everybody who helped me to celebrate my 90th birthday and a huge thank you to all who donated and helped me raise the final total.”

Her granddaughter Helen Flack, 40, added: “She’s an absolutely remarkable lady. The generosity of people has just bowled her over.”
