Closure is ammunition
I WAS pleased to read the letter from Cllr John Griffiths, setting the record straight on business rates (Bury Free Press, January 27). After reading the various letters in these columns, empathising and expressing support for Charlotte West, who is being forced to close her shop Millie in the Buttermarket, Mr Griffiths will surely now have ammunition when he lobbies central Government and thepeople who work for the Valuation Office Agency, which greedily increased Charlotte’s rates from £1,200 to £2,500.
This move was short-sighted, unnecessary and unwarranted.
When the VOA is sent a copy of the ‘dot-to-dot’ book suggested by reader Keith Chapman (Letters, January 20), perhaps they could also be sent a copy of the ‘hymn sheet’ mentioned by Mark Cordell, Bid4Bury chief executive.
