Battling for a bandstand

Once again our borough council has engaged expensive outside consultants – this time to submit a bid for the Abbey Gardens under the Lottery’s Parks for People initiative.

Surely this is unacceptable greed – reducing funding available for much more deprived areas in eastern England where the need is so much greater?

Some 36,000 people live in Bury St Edmunds and surrounds who should be consulted, not ignored and told by a small group of a certain age and type what is good for them. Residents fully understand the historical importance of the gardens.

No mention is made in the draft bid of the widespread support and need for a permanently covered outside venue of at least 10 metres diameter (doubling as a bandstand) to give shelter and enjoyment in all weathers, positioned in the Cloister Garden (east of the Rose Garden). Our council is using English Heritage’s claimed opposition as a scapegoat to hide behind.

The next public meeting is on Wednesday, February 8, 6.30pm at The Athenaeum. Please try to attend, also councillors are welcome to represent their constituents’ views.

Little time is left – it is planned to submit the first ill-advised bid in February.
