ABC: Let us help voters

As the wife of a Bury St Edmunds town councillor, I experience many people complaining and moaning about what councillors do or don't do for their electorate.

But what I find much more frustrating is the party known as ABC. This group also has made many claims to the electorate, but as yet is also still unable to deliver. Was its aim not to close down Bury St Edmunds Town Council? Has it achieved this yet? No is the only answer. Has the ABC group actually saved any money as yet? Again I guess the answer is No.

What it has achieved to date is the following:

Stopped the St Edmunds Day service and charity awards, affecting many worthy local charities;

Severed any links between the town council and Bury in Bloom, Guildhall Trust and numerous other working groups;

Prevented the councillors' comments on planning and licensing applications (such as the topical ASDA development, much wanted by many people of the town);

Caused undue worry to staff at the town council offices;

Made the future of the Christmas lights unsure (but as many of the ABC members are business people in the town centre, I feel this one they may let go);

Made Bury a laughing stock, at a time when we should be proud of our town in the national finals of Britain in Bloom, and;

Prohibited my family (two children), who enjoy civic functions very much, from attending any events, representing the town we all feel proud to live in.

This group has not actually achieved anything positive.

It now claims it probably won't be able to close down the town council, due to forthcoming unitary control. So it has let the electorate down, too.

But the most frustrating thing is ABC will not allow my husband to help the people of the Moreton Hall ward, of whom more than 750 elected him.

It is obvious that the group doesn't want to take the role seriously and make a difference, but don't stop someone, who does not get paid, gives up his own time and is often criticised, from wanting to help.

The people of Bury would like to live in a democratic society and not under a dictatorship.
