Cheapest energy

WHAT is it about Conservatives and opposition to on-shore windfarms? (Bury Free Press, February 11).

Help for veterans

DURING and after every war, questions are raised about the adequacy of care for wounded service people returning home. Since the days of Elizabeth I, some provision has existed, although the extent of state sponsored largess is often seen as inadequate.

Decision will hit villagers

St Edmundsbury Borough Council sends out 2,000 questionnaires, how many reply? 900, less than half!

Eyesores in the town

Is the scaffolding above Tesco Express in St Andrew’s Street ever going to be dismantled? The store has been open for ages; the old scaffolding doesn’t seem to be doing anything, there is never anyone working up there and it is just a plain eyesore.

Roads can’t cope now

I write in response to your article on Vision 31 (Bury Free Press, February 2), specifically with regards to the North-West Bury St Edmunds proposals.

Turbines not the answer

WITH many cross party members calling for the Prime Minister to cut back or cease playing supplements to the wind farm turbine companies, I would like to recount a few facts from a conference I attended while serving as a district councillor.

No freeze on tax here

Brandon Town Council’s decision to raise the Council Tax by 41 per cent is nothing short of blatant opportunism.

Dazzling . . . and dim

DRIVERS in and around the Bury St Edmunds area seem to drift from the dazzling to the dim.

Kitemark is deserved

CONGRATULATIONS – I was very pleased to read St Peter’s House, in Bury St Edmunds, had been awarded the Butterfly Kitemark accreditation for the high quality of its staff.

Hockey action from Bury St Edmunds Men's III v Bury St Edmunds Men's IV at Nowton Park.

Hockey club is looking for your memories

THIS year sees the Queen celebrate 60 years on the throne, the Olympics being held in London and Bury St Edmunds Hockey Club celebrating 100 years of existence.

A sensible proposal

I refer to Paul Derrick’s article (Bury Free Press, January 27) in which he mentions the merits of paying your parking fee upon exiting the arc car park in Bury St Edmunds.

Flagging up equality

It should be a given that in the UK the police treat everyone equally, with no need to advertise the fact.

Clause for concern

It wasn’t a front page splash, but tucked away on page 3 (Bury Free Press, February 3) was the commendable decision of retiring council chief executives to fall upon their swords and give up combined salaries of £ 227,000 to make way for one joint chief executive.

Let’s work together

I feel I must make a comment on the front page article (Bury Free Press Mildenhall edition, January 27) regarding Mildenhall town centre.

A sigh of resignation

when free bus passes were issued, a large proportion of older people and pensioners heaved a sigh of relief. This has now, due to the inaction of the council, been forcibly changed to a sigh of resignation. All the town traders will, I expect, be wondering how soon they will have to close, due to the inevitable sharp drop in custom.

A formula for disaster

Reading the Bury Free Press (January 27), I see a formula for disaster hanging over this town.

Closure is ammunition

I WAS pleased to read the letter from Cllr John Griffiths, setting the record straight on business rates (Bury Free Press, January 27). After reading the various letters in these columns, empathising and expressing support for Charlotte West, who is being forced to close her shop Millie in the Buttermarket, Mr Griffiths will surely now have ammunition when he lobbies central Government and thepeople who work for the Valuation Office Agency, which greedily increased Charlotte’s rates from £1,200 to £2,500.

Friends indeed

IN RESPONSE his letter concerning a bandstand in the Abbey Gardens (Bury Free Press, January 27), may I remind Mr Harding and all readers of the Bury Free Press, that the meeting in The Athenaeum on February 8 is a general meeting of the Abbey Gardens Friends and not of the borough council.

Pooling our memories

I am currently in the process of writing a book and am looking for a couple of items which I hope your readers may be able to help me with.

Beware of thieves

I was interested, but not at all surprised, to read of an ‘honesty box’ being targeted by thieves in Great Barton (Bury Free Press, January 20).

Fighting for businesses

To set the record straight, St Edmundsbury does not set, or keep, business rates. The council simply collects them on behalf of central Government, who sets the rates and takes the income from them.

Battling for a bandstand

Once again our borough council has engaged expensive outside consultants – this time to submit a bid for the Abbey Gardens under the Lottery’s Parks for People initiative.

We’ve lost influence

YOUR brief article (Bury Free Press, January 20) regarding my former membership of the National Association of Local Councils, including two major committee memberships, omitted a most important point.

A chance to say thanks

I would just like to thank a very kind lady who helped guide me into a space at Hatters Lane, Bury St Edmunds, on Wednesday January 11 around 10.30am.

Meeting failed to give hint of shock to come

Like many of the residents in Bury St Edmunds who were shocked and surprised at the withdrawal of First Buses from Bury St Edmunds, I too was equally shocked (Bury Free Press, January 20).
