To mark her 50th birthday on Saturday, Lesley Ryland has gone the extra mile with an ambitious charity rowing and cycling challenge.

Mrs Ryland, a director at Thurlow Champness jewellers, in Bury St Edmunds, embarked on a ‘50-50-50’ fund-raiser completing half a marathon on a rowing machine at Bury Leisure Centre followed by a 52 mile bike ride.

The challenge was in aid of the business’ charity of the year Cancer Research UK and she has already raised about £2,000.

Mrs Ryland completed the 13.1 miles of rowing in one hour and 34 minutes after receiving training from Antony Cullen.

She undertook the bike ride from the leisure centre and back with Ian Turner, of Bury Wheel.

The route included Thurston, Rickinghall and Honington and she managed it in three and a half hours.

She trained for the event for nearly six months.
