Youths make a difference to community

A group of young people have made a difference to the community after revamping a Bury St Edmunds pensioner’s
garden.

The youths - the majority of whom are young offenders - have cut back and tidied the front and back gardens of 68-year-old Kenneth Payne, of Haberden Place.

The work, which forms part of their community service hours, started in late November under the supervision of charity Catch 22.

The organisation, in St Andrews Street South, Bury, works with the Suffolk Youth Offending service to ensure young people fulfill a community sentence.

Among those taking part in the project was Helen - name changed for legal reasons - who first became involved with Catch 22 in September as she had to complete 35 hours in community service.

She is now volunteering for them and was so inspired she started a college horticultural course. Louise Barnett, reparation and mentoring officer for Catch 22, highlighted the ‘rewarding’ effects of the work.

She added: “It’s helping the community.” As part of the project, they have laid down wood chippings donated by Viking Tree Services, in Bury.
