World champ helps celebrate as 500 milers in Bury St Edmunds raise £9,000

World Decaman champion Simon Bourne and Abbeycroft Leisure’s Michelle Banfield-Curran have celebrated the achievements of 500 people who raised £9,000 after taking part in the Sports Relief Mile in Bury St Edmunds.
The event was in March 25, although the money has only just been collected.
It was organised by Abbeycroft Leisure at the West Suffolk Athletics Arena in Bury to raise money for projects supported by Comic Relief.
Abbeycroft’s sporting ambassador Simon Bourne, who recently won the World Decaman Champion title and launched the event last year, said: “This is a fantastic amount to raise from a small community in Bury St Edmunds.
“I am absolutely thrilled that so many people participated and raised such a wonderful sum of money for people less fortunate. I hope too that it has inspired people in the borough to continue to keep active.”
It was the second time that the leisure centre, managed in partnership by Abbeycroft Leisure and St Edmundsbury Borough Council, hosted Sport Relief Mile.
In 2010 700 people participated, many from the Haverhill area which had its own Sport Mile this year.
Michelle Banfield-Curran, Abbeycroft’s Partnership Manager, said: “We were so pleased with the turn out this year and that we have been able to organise this event and play a small part in so many people from our community raising money for such a good cause.
“We want to thank everyone who came along, helped out at the event and to Simon for inspiring people to come along and join in.
“As World Decaman Champion he is an inspiration to others and a great ambassador and supporter of our Active St Eds campaign.”
The Sport Relief Mile is held every other year at locations across the UK and anyone of any age of ability can take part by walking, running or jogging, including those with physical and learning disabilities. Participants ran, jogged and walked one, three or six miles in aid of Sport Relief.
The money is used by Comic Relief to help transform the lives of poor and vulnerable people, both at home and across the world’s poorest countries.
