Bury St Edmunds’ reputation as a floral town is helping its budding young gardeners to bloom.

“Bury does stand out. Look at the turnout here, 10 schools have come out,” said Alison Findlay, the Royal Horticultural Society’s Campaign for School Gardening’s East of England advisor, at a teachers ‘ seminar at St James Middle School, Bury last week.

“Setting children on the path to being gardeners is important,” she added. “The relationship with Bury in Bloom helps. It’s great how they get schools involved.”

Jean Hardy, a judge for the Bury in Bloom Young Green Fingers Competition, said: “The Young Green Fingers team which has been working with schools in Bury is now working with schools in villages.”
