Villagers in Drinkstone cut the first turf as they begin building work on the new village hall

CONSTRUCTION work on a new village hall has started in Drinkstone.

The former hall, which stood in the village since 1924 and which served as a war memorial, was devastated by a fire in September 2010 which damaged the front entrance, kitchen and toilets.

The fire, caused by an electrical fault, brought a premature end to the hall ,which had hosted musicians from the Glen Miller Orchestra during World War Two, and had played a daily role in village life.

The hall had originally been an offices mess hut at Great Ashfield during World War One, before being moved to Drinkstone.

The fire meant villagers had to bring forward plans and fund-raising to replace the hut with a modern, more energy efficient building.

It also saw the old hall again dismantled in April last year and moved to Stow Marie Aerodrome Museum, where it will be used as an education centre and lecture room.

Sue Foulsham, chairman of the Drinkstone village hall committee, said work on the new hall brought an end to years of uncertainty and delay. Once completed, it will be re-designated as the village war memorial.
