Work begins on public open space

PREPARATIONS for work on a public open space on Moreton Hall have got under way.

This week, Taylor Wimpey began constructing temporary welfare facilities on the site south of Airfield Road.

A spokesman for the developer confirmed the facilities, which will include a site office, canteen, drying room and toilets, will be used by the workforce responsible for implementing work on the public open space.

But they are being built initially for use by construction site personnel from the adjacent St Edmunds Gate homes development, which is expected to be completed by spring next year.

The spokesman said: “Subject to planning approval and the tendering process, we anticipate work could potentially commence on the public open space within the next three months”

He added: “The first stage of the project will include ground preparation and planting, which should take three months to complete, subject to weather and ground conditions.”

The community space will comprise a multi-use games area and general play area, both of which are to be designed and provided by St Edmundsbury Borough Council, with Taylor Wimpey providing the space for the facilities.

There will also be a kickabout area, outdoor classrooms, seating areas, an events space, woodland copse and a comprehensive footpath network – all of which will be provided by Taylor Wimpey.

A consultation on the proposed plan, which took place over a five week period between January and February last year, drew 47 responses from residents.

All received feedback from the council and were considered by Taylor Wimpey when it refined its plans.

In February this year, the developer submitted revised plans, which council planners have recommended for approval.
