Woman who’s afraid to sleep
Jennifer Bluett has a blocked trachea and is waiting for an operation which has been scheduled for the end of the month. She is finding it difficult to breathe and is not able to move around easily.
A woman from Bury St Edmunds who spent Sunday night in a police cell says it was the best night’s sleep she has had in weeks.
Jennifer Bluett has a narrowing of her windpipe which means she struggles to breathe.
“I can’t really move or do anything and I’m scared to go to sleep in case I don’t wake up,” she said.
But on Sunday, she was arrested following an incident at a hospital and slept ‘like a log’ while in police custody.
She says scar skin cells regularly cause her windpipe to become blocked and, although she has an operation scheduled later this month, for the frightened 31-year-old that day can not come soon enough, causing her to feel let down by the health service.
She said: “In the cell, I felt safe. I had a camera on me and knew I was being watched by an officer. I slept like a log in the knowledge that if I screamed for help because my breathing got worse, someone would be around to help – care, I feel, the NHS should be providing.”
“It’s sad that it’s easier for me to get a bed in a cell and be kept safe than it is for me to get a hospital bed.”
A spokeswoman for Addenbrooke’s Hospital, which will perform the operation, confirmed Miss Bluett was scheduled for treatment this month and that clinical staff were in contact with her.
She added: “We advise patients who have any ongoing concerns about their health to contact their GP.”
Miss Bluett’s health problems stem from injuries she received in 1998 after jumping from a third floor window to flee from intruders.
She plunged more than 40ft to a concrete floor below.
