Woman who cared for hundreds of stray cats in Bury St Edmunds dies

One of the founders of Cats Protection in Bury St Edmunds has died after a long illness.

Pat Greenhalgh who was 80, ran the Broofield Cattery in Bradfield St George amd helped found the Bury branch of Cats Protection.

She cared for hundreds of abandoned and homeless cats for 20 years before retiring in 2002.

Mrs Greenhalgh, a former primary school teacher, moved to the village in the late 1070s woith her husband Alan. He built her the cattery which she ran with their daughter Val White.

“Cats were mums’s life – so much so that when they were first married my dad suggeste he should call the house ‘Pat’s Cats Home’.

“He knew what he was getting into and fortunately he was also a great cat lover.

“They thoroughly enjoyed running the cattery with me, and gradually, mums started doing more and more for Cats Protection.

“In the end she had pens for ten homeless cats in her garden.

“Sadly my dad died two year ago and I don’t think mum ever really got over it. He was the love of her life – together with the cats of course.” Her funeral takes place on Friday (1) at West Suffolk Crematorium at 4.30pm. Donations to the Bury Branch of Cats Protection.
