Woman left in ‘serious condition’ after crash
A WOMAN remains in a serious condition after a head-on impact between a coach carrying schoolchildren and a car.
Twelve people were taken to hospital following the collision between the white Scania coach and a black Mercedes at around 1.25pm near the war memorial on the A11 at Elveden last Friday.
The woman, who was travelling in the Mercedes, was airlifted to Addenbrooke’s Hospital,in Cambridge, where she was reported to be in a critical but stable condition on Friday.
Her condition was said to be ‘serious’ on Tuesday.
Three others from the Mercedes also suffered serious injuries. One was taken to Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital and the other two were airlifted to Addenbrooke’s.
The coach was carrying 48 people, including children from Oaks Park High School, in Newbury Park, London.
Five children, aged between 14 and 15, were taken to West Suffolk Hospital, in Bury St Edmunds, with minor injuries.
David Dutch, deputy headteacher, said the pupils had been returning from a geography field trip at the University of East Anglia in Norwich.
“All the children, including the ones who were hurt are now fine and in good spirits.
“A few were really upset by the injuries to the people in the other car and we wish them well,” he said.
Mr Dutch also praised the coach driver, who reacted quickly to the emergency.
“He was excellent. He helped to extinguish a fire in the car and to wrap the children up in blankets,” he said.
He added that the reaction of school staff and the emergency services was ‘fantastic’.
The injured students, who suffered cuts and bruises, had all returned home by 8.30pm, according to Mr Dutch.
The incident initially left the busy stretch of road closed for six hours.
Alfie Boe fans were among those affected by the incident as they travelled to his concert at High Lodge.
