Woman dies four weeks after crash

A car crash that killed two US airmen has claimed a third victim nearly a month later.

Gweneth Wainwright – known to friends and family as Angie – died on Monday, more than four weeks after the horrific collision on the A1101, at Icklingham.

The 55-year-old, from Abbots Close, Denham, was taken to Addenbrooke's Hospital, in Cambridge, suffering from head injuries after the Nissan Primera she was a passenger in was involved in a collision with a BMW.

Mrs Wainwright was transferred to West Suffolk Hospital, in Bury St Edmunds, two weeks ago but died this week as a result of her injuries.

Her death came nearly a month after the collision, which happened on May 30 at 7.20pm.

Her husband Les, who was also a passenger in the car, remains at West Suffolk Hospital in a stable condition, while their daughter, who was driving, is in a stable condition at Addenbrooke's. A two-year-old boy in the back of the car was unhurt.

One of the couple's neighbours, who did not want to be named, said he was shocked by Mrs Wainwright's death, and added: "They're a lovely couple. They were so close – they did everything together.

"You couldn't have asked for a better neighbour."

Staff Sergeant Mark Stephany, 24, who was driving the BMW, and passenger Senior Airman Daniel Addabbo, 23, both of RAF Lakenheath, died at the scene of the collision, while two other airmen suffered minor injuries.

The cause of the accident is still being investigated by police, who have renewed their appeal for witnesses.

Anyone who saw the collision, or who may have seen the green BMW or the blue Nissan travelling along the A1101 beforehand, should contact Pc Paul Smith on 01473 613500.
